And now for a General Chat thread for the new season.
My first though — Hey! League Pass is a lot cheaper this year! I did not expect that. Especially with league revenues soaring, media rights getting more expensive, and salaries going way way up. I assumed I'd be getting hosed. But with the US dollar on the rise, the price for the season here in Korea is going to be under US$90. Nice~

Ya I'm actually planning on doing a trial very soon and check to see if VPN work and if so I'm dumping cable for that new price.

So Ben Simmons had 470 days to practice free throws and shooting and still sucks. Anyone surprised? Missed his first 2 with away Philly fans booing him. 470 days since his last game and no progress. This dude just doesn't try to do anything to improve.

Ben Simmons can walk backward through a field of dicks. Free throws aren't complicated.

Eastern Conference is a crazy conference where everyone seems to be trying and everyone thinks they can make the playoffs. It'll be interesting to see which teams abandon the season early as they go for Victor/Scoot instead of a failed experiment at making a 9/10 play-in spot.
Pacers are expected to give up but they haven't emptied the team yet entirely to get there (not that Turner or Hield drive too much winning), but everyone expects them to give up and go for the bottom so ignore them.
I think Charlotte at this point is all but assured to be one of those teams even if they don't want to. All the expected lower teams could be there although they feel like they are targeting winning as soon as possible. Detroit made a bunch of moves that move them into winning mode now. Orlando hasn't made much moves but people are looking for them to push for the play-in. Wizards is perpetually looking to try for the playoffs and probably think they should be there this year after playing well with KP and hope Beal returning will get them there. Knicks made a new signing and still have Tibs so they are obviously going to start the year going for it. All of these teams are easy picks that a slow start or a key player injury could cause them to switch early to race to the bottom.
Others that I think could be right there too but needs to be drastic. Atlanta for example, if Trae goes down early for any time they will be absolute garbage but with a team that requires him to succeed on offense and they still own their pick this year. Chicago seems like a thought since they don't seem good enough, but they are going to struggle to be bad enough to get to the bottom with their draft pick only staying theirs from 1-4 (horrible trade for Vuc). Any others could go that way too if they have some serious disaster but it seems like barring disaster the other teams will be too good.

I will never be an advocate of tanking for a pick but the player that started my fandom of the NBA was Ralph Sampson about 40 years ago. This kid is so much like Sampson that would truly love to be a fan of the team that gets to draft him. I hope he has the career that was taken away from Sampson because of his injuries.

I agree, I generally don't like it, especially for teams that do tanking rebuild so you have 4 years of being brutal to hopefully land multiple people to turn it around while teaching horrible habits to everyone involved. This year the top 2 guys seem to be stars in the making and Victor being a generational player there is too much star talent there to keep playing for 11th place.

I thought the Lakers were going to make the playoffs this year but that was mostly based on thinking they have to trade Russ and the picks and end up with a few good rotation players, the more the merrier. Anyways, I just saw a video of Lakers vs Blazers that just about sum them up entirely. streamable.com/6czjb5Anyways Davis moves to the corner to space the floor, gets the pass so he preps to shoot as he is WIDE open. What does his defender Nurk do? Turns completely away from him, even turning the wrong way, to let him fire wide open all he wants. How does AD reward them for this insane treatment? He hits the side of the backboard. Easiest shot 3 with all the time in the world and it's clanked. I thought Davis would be pissed off and come back ready to kill, but he still can't shoot and neither can anyone else. Blazers are just completely ignoring half the Lakers and just packing the paint and there's nothing they can do.

This is such a fun part of the season. Utah is 3-0. Philly is 0-3. Crap teams are winning. Good teams are losing. Going to take another 20 games or so to begin to sort out what's real and what's statistical abberation. But for now, the chaos is fun.

Isn't it incredible that a team with the arguable GOAT, who is still an elite player and Anthony Davis is actually this bad? Westbrook will be scapegoated. And while he is trash now and may be out of the league next year, or at least finding himself doing the Dougie in his home (apparently he's LBJ's neighbour now), their problems run so much deeper than just him.

I haven't watched any of them play because I couldn't give a shit, but David Thorpe was talking about how LeBron and Davis look like they already know this team isn't good enough to win anything and are already checked it for the season. That Russ isn't good but if these 2 have a shit they would likely be 2 and 1 so far the year. Maybe it actually is more malicious in that they are throwing the start of the season to force a trade so that they have a chance at something.
If not for the time clock on LeBron playing it sure seems like it would be in their best interest to just tell Russ to go home and not trade him away at all if it requires a first and just use his cap space to fill out the roster better without using the picks. Even if they did the Turner and Buddy for Westbrook trade, ok now they have Schroeder/Beverley, Buddy, LeBron, AD, Turner which is pretty good but not great and then a horrible bench. Now they have no picks left to improve and to sink their future they go for 6th place and a first round exit.
Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

I'd just like to point out that our old Raptor Jonas at the moment has a 26.9 PER. I always love seeing him do well.

He was always a bull for Toronto, dude showed up to the playoffs to cheer on the team after getting traded. He may have never been the most popular player but he's a Raptors legend of sorts for me.

Best thing about Jonas is that he showed up for the playoffs for every team he's been on. The guy has heart.

Best thing about Jonas is that he showed up for the playoffs for every team he's been on. The guy has heart. Playoff JV is real and it's magnificent. The Nets series when they just brought in their big 3 past their prime players we won game 2 and almost 1 on JV domination so much so that the Nets rearranged their whole plan and just get guys to go near him and dive away to get him in foul trouble because you couldn't beat him. Just looked it up and this was actually first playoffs in his first playoff game, he went 17 pts and 18 reb, then 15 and 14. The next game he got 5 fouls then 4 fouls and his playing time dropped and at that point he was taken out of the series. His Indiana series 2 years later is pretty great too. 12 and 19, 23 and 15, 9 and 14. It seems in all of these as time goes on his production gets worse as teams change what they are doing to take him out and Casey couldn't respond to bring him back. He was killing Whiteside and the Heat the series after until that injury. Good times. This doesn't count for much in basketball, but his wife is also quite good looking. www.basketball-reference.com/players/v/valanjo01/gamelog-playoffs/

Steve Nash and Brooklyn have agreed to part ways, Ime Udoka is billed as the front runner for replacement. www.sportingnews.com/ca/nba/news/steve-nash-fired-nets/dz05arhjqk7z2gttv3fhwcnoI thought Ime was suspended but not fired. Would they not need to get Boston's approval before being able to even talk to him about a contract? Also, my first thought was Nets need to have a waiver in his contract that he's allowed to have sex with whoever he wants and any new female hire sign a waiver that by accepting this job they know it could come with being hit on by Ime. Anyways, I don't know why this wasn't just done in the summer. Nash wanted out, this guy wanted an easy job and he got the most insane one there is. Durant wanted him out. Nash should have just said yes I'm not interested I'm going back to chilling at home. EDIT: Sounds like Ime is already hired now too. Celtics had given him permission to go anywhere else if he can, pretty sure they allows them to get off his money owed in the future as he was still under contract. Now I guess they see if they want to stick with their current coach.

Someone pointed out something hilarious, there was plenty of clean record coaches but the chaos team picked the chaos coach. Nash didn't fit because he's not chaos and they need someone at the right level. This is the most dramatic team they could assemble possible. They had a goal and they fulfilled it.

The question I have is if Udoka is hired, when the nets go to visit the Celtics for a game, is Udoka barred from the premises?

So kyrie is donating 500k to anti defamation league to try to show he's not an asshole, but to add to the obvious shame of it all Kyrie himself didn't even talk directly to them but his mom and step dad did. Fucking hate this guy.

Maybe Kyrie really is Jewish? Because his “I can’t be antisemitic because I’m one of the real Jews (unlike those other fakers)” is some really impressive chutzpah.
Really hoping he’s still not allowed to play in Canada…. What an asshole.

So Irving is suspended for 5 games. I'm not going to cheer this because to be honest I'm just tired of the guy. He's weird, probably psychologically abnormal, a narcissist, etc. He got enough money to just go away and live better than 99.9% of the world's population. The NBA doesn't need him. I sure don't. Let him find his platform elsewhere.

Minimum 5 days but can be longer. It's dependent on him completing certain steps to be better, likely including that he renounce his beliefs... Considering in his press conference he said he won't back down in his beliefs he'll only get stronger because he has an army behind him, he's not going to do that. This might be his last game as a Net.
