I did the math - in about 8.67 years, I will pass BorisD at his/my current pace for lead poster. It is ON! Yeah, but before then someone will make a comment about DD's great defense or wondering "Is it time to bring back Bargnani?", and Boris will double his post count in an afternoon. He can afford to take those little vacations ... Kind of like LeBron's effort level at Cleveland this year. I decided to take my talents to my WSET Level III class, gents. At least for a short vacation. Awesome class, tons of work. Just had my exam yesterday. Blind tasting + theory. If I pass it (and who am I kidding, I'm going to pass it - not with distinction again, I don't think, but at least with honours), I will actually be poised to enter that industry. Problem is, I'm making enough at my current employ that generally speaking to make a move to another industry it's going to cost me money. But then again, I've personally increased revenues in my department by 45% this year-to-date over last year-to-date (yes, that's an actual number, and it's still climbing) and they're not offering me any more money, so I'm kinda butthurt about that and more than happy to take a slight hit in the wallet to explore new challenges and opportunities. I was actually at Game 1 in our series. I sat eight rows directly behind the Premier and had enough restraint to not throw something at her.

^^^ Your avatar works better than ever now! Good luck on the exam (you won't need it) Thanks, tech! Like I said, I'm pretty sure I will pass in the mid-70s (which they call "pass with merit"). 80% is "pass with distinction". I'd be surprised if I made that level, but not really displeased - there were LCBO product consultants in that class who I'm entirely sure will fail. (At least, they said they were going to fail.) I was the only one in the class not currently in the industry and was an above-average student, so I take some satisfaction from that.. Oh, well. I'd like to progress further but I don't know if I can swing that. I'd have to find a job in the industry where my employer would subsidize my time and education to go onto the next levels.

There's the difference, you're doing it because it's something you're passionate about. They're doing it because of their job. Oh, well. I'd like to progress further but I don't know if I can swing that. I'd have to find a job in the industry where my employer would subsidize my time and education to go onto the next levels. There is a big push in Bruce County (Kincardine area) right now to start and develop several vineyards, and establish a "wine region". It'll likely be a decade before the first product is sold, but there might be some opportunities here, and possibly closer to K-W as well. Might be nice to get in on the front-end.

There's the difference, you're doing it because it's something you're passionate about. They're doing it because of their job. This is true, but I don't think any of them were actually there because their jobs mandated it. They wanted to get ahead and were taking that course out of their own initiative. But it did expose my lack of tasting experience. I just need to find a job where I'm tasting 4-6 different things every day. Hmmm, that's going to be a tough row to hoe. It's awfully far north for vitis vinifera grape varieties. I know that the Lake will mediate some of the cold but it's going to take a lot of technology and innovation (and focus on cold-climate-only grapes and wine styles) for anything to get done up there. And even then, chances are it will be mostly the not-quite-so-nice hybrid varieties, like Maréchal Foch or Frontenac. I actually wonder if Champagne-style sparkling wines would work there. I know they make effortlessly good sparklers in Prince Edward County (my instructor, Will Predhomme, is in some sort of capacity at Hinterland Winery and says that that region is in a perfect location to make Champagne Grand Cru quality stuff at a fraction of the price because the grapes can easily be held short of full sugar ripeness due to the cold). However, full disclosure: I am currently seeking land in the Ottawa valley region to make Normandy/Québec-style sparkling cider in the Champagne method and a Calvados-Pays-d'Auge-style apple brandy. I have a business plan written up and will actually be making a prototype batch in my garage this winter (of the cider, at least - not the Calvados). My hope is to get some land purchased within the next two-four years and get some trees in the ground.

So, Bill Simmons just got fired, in a rather inglorious fashion. I was a reasonably big fan of his (although more recently, more for his abilities as an editor and talent scout than for his writing). I'm not about to feel bad for someone making that many millions of dollars a year... but it is fascinating just how little a top creator means to a media behemoth these days.

So glad I don't have to listen to Bill Simon's nonsense anymore. Now if Jeff VanGundy would just go off on a ridiculous tangent and get himself fired to, then I will never have to watch another basketball game on mute again.

So by now most of you have probably heard about the guy who made an a$$ out of himself at a TFC game. I don't know about you guys, but getting fired over that seems pretty harsh. Don't get me wrong, the guy's a douchebag, but to lose your job over a stupid joke seems like an overreaction. Am I alone here?

I can see why a company would not want to be associated with a guy like that - It's happened too many political figures, athletes and even people in the media so why shouldn't an employee at Hydro one face similar consequences? Than again, if we're firing people for drunken rants, I'm sure none of us would have a job, either.

Hydro One definitely has a right to protect their reputation (not much there to protect but whatever), I just think losing a six figure job over that is eye opening.
With that said, should Elizabeth May resign after that weird rant she made at a dinner? I'm suprised there was so little covereage given that she's a federal party leader and everything.

He deserves to be punished, for sure, but it seems kind of excessive. The reporter said she gets it 10 times a day, and it wasnt like he was representing hydroone. I dont really think its fair to make an example of this guy.

Like many companies - nevermind government owned ones - I sign a Code of Conduct agreement, that is renewed annually, that in effect boils down to "don't be a fucking idiot and embarrass yourself or the company name." Pretty simple to get by really: don't use your real name on the Raps board, say, if you're going to say some questionable things. Don't use your real name on Twitter if you're going to pop off, say. And most of all, don't go on TV and say stupid shit. And nevermind all that, don't embarrass your family name, particularly on Mother's Day.
Any of the fellas on here that have had a beer with me know I'm as vulgar as it gets - but I know enough (drunk or sober) to not do it in a way that I end up in a paper, or on TV.
This clown got what he deserved.

Ya I don't feel bad either, he's a tool and that sort of behavior is just stupid, I'm glad stuff like that gets punished.
Also the drunk and stupid excuse goes out the window when you're still doing it the next day at work and still super proud of your attitude.

I maintain that had they showed an ounce of remorse when confronted - "you know what? That was dumb as hell. Sorry" - that never makes it to air. Instead, they doubled down (or went all in) and the rest is history.

I maintain that had they showed an ounce of remorse when confronted - "you know what? That was dumb as hell. Sorry" - that never makes it to air. Instead, they doubled down (or went all in) and the rest is history. While I agree with your point in the main (that morons who embarrass themselves publicly should face some repercussions in the professional sphere), I would tend to disagree with this. While I have put my own foot in my mouth enough times to be gladly willing to forgive anybody an indiscretion if they own up and apologize with something that resembles remorse (at least, close enough to it in a dimly-lit, smoky room), this isn't the norm any more. Once social media outrage is sparked, it's an instant wildfire. Apologize or no, you're history. Consider this prominent example: a manager at an independent restaurant in California once upon a time donated $100 to an organization committed to promoting Proposition 8 (a ballot initiative on keeping the legal definition of marriage between one man and one woman. The initiative passed the popular vote in California, but ultimately a Federal court threw out the result of the people's democratically-expressed will and made same-sex marriage legal. One would think that the battle was over, right? Not so much. Some LGBT activist in the IRS decided to leak all the contribution records to those groups to the media, so even though those were supposed to be confidential, now the hounds are set loose. So some people recognize the name of one lady who was the manager of some faux-Mexican type restaurant and set a boycott loose on them until she was forced to resign. Did she ever treat any LGBT staff or customers in an undignified way? Nope. Didn't matter, though. A lifelong Mormon, she apparently no longer has the right to advocate her own beliefs and conscience in the most benign and non-subversive way imaginable. Private donations made with your own private money are now subject to real public consequences once social media gets a hold of you, even if 52% of the people of the state voted the way you advocated. Oh, was the IRS agent who released that information about her fired or forced to resign? Nope. So while I have no fond opinions of these morons and while I agree that a show of contrition and apology would have been enough for a sane society to say, "you know what, these two clowns learned their lesson - let's move on", the reality is that it seldom works that way any more.

. Shouting "fuck her in the pussy" in the middle of a broadcast is basically asking to be punished. Discretely donating a small sum of money to a legitimate political cause is different. Especially when the person never intended the donation to be public knowledge. I don't understand the comparison. I'm just saying, the Perpetual Outrage Machine that is social media can take on a life of its own. And while it may seem like two different things being compared, the result was the exact same: these guys with the FHITP schtick and the matronly woman who discretely donated to a legitimate political cause both lost their jobs. That's the power of social media in our society, and it needs to be curtailed by people refusing to play along with it.

I was at a cottage this weekend with someone who works at HydroOne, and while he didn't actually know the guy, he has shown remorse. He sent a letter of apology to the women reporter, but it reeks of being something his union rep told him to do, as all these letters do. Point is he is still fired with his little remorse shown.

He must have thick skin, or skull for that matter. You'd think that having an embarrassing video of yourself shown over and over again on national television, followed by thousands of really nasty responses would change a person's behaviour... I'm somewhat glad he's not traumatized by the whole ordeal, if that ever happened to me I'd never want to show my face in public ever again.
