So Rachel had been removed from ESPN entirely after she makes a private comment about not wanting to be bumped from an assignment she felt she earned just to someone getting a bump because ESPN needs more female and black reporters. She even goes as far as saying she knows all about getting the female bump and just doesn't want it to affect her.
This is just a realistic conversation from her. My company has announced that they are looking to have more females and people of color higher up in the company than they currently have. This means me being a white male will be slightly less likely to move up (not that I'm realistically expecting it anyways, just for argument sake). This is the reality, you can't have both increased numbers of female/people of color and also same odds for those who don't qualify. It would suck it you lose a job solely because of ethnicity or sex. Anyone would be pissed about that. I really don't see what is so controversial to saying I don't want to lose my spot just because of fixing numbers... Of course Rachel is slightly different since she probably had the same bump to help her up the list.
Or course there's also no way of knowing that's what happened anywhere there or ever but it does give a seed of doubt. Also I completely understand the thought process too, people like me have had an unfair advantage and it is trying to be fixed and it takes time to do it and maybe a temporary slightly unfair advantage goes back the other way then do be it.

To be fair, Nichols also is reported to have bad-mouthed her colleagues. Exactly the wrong mistake to make these days. No one has a right to be on TV and make millions of dollars. ESPN is a joke … but if it’s going to use it’s clout to promote an excellent black female reporter, that doesn’t make me sad. Nichols can always regroup and try again.

My level of sympathy/empathy for people making millions of dollars has dropped dramatically in the last decade. Yes they have problems and maybe even real grievances but they can retire at any time and live a hell of a nice life if they can put their ego and problems behind them.

Agreed, I'm not worried about Rachel, just looking at the situation and don't think this should be a fireable offense. That's being said if she was taking shots at colleagues too then it can make more sense.
ESPN as a whole seems like a bag of crap anyways with most shows just being people argue about all their wild takes just trying to be controversial to cause discussion and anger at them. None of their reporters on TV deserve anything near what they make. I really only like Zach Lowe, Kevin arnovitz and maybe 1 or 2 more than are the quiet ones that just make good reads based on deeper basketball skill reads and not emotion.

Anyone there can be fired at any time. Freedom! Freedom to eat horse deworming medicine! As Clint Eastwood said in Unforgiven: "Deserve got nothing to do with it." (And "We all have it coming.") God, I do miss Grantland, though.

Ya Grantland really had it all figured out. The fact that ESPN burned that to the ground because of one criticism of the NFL kind of explains everything about them in one shot.
