So, as i mentioned in another thread, I have now noticed that my mindset has switched over to tanking without even really deciding it. I just started being happy for loses.
So what does that mean? If we are tanking what does a tank look like for these Raptors?
First off, who do you trade away?
GTJ is an easy trade, he's basically an expiring this year anyways with a player option on his final year.
OG - I think this is an easy one as well in the other direction, I wouldn't be trading OG. OG is 25, carries major skillset that every good team needs, he would be a starter on every championship team without question and has plenty of time left in his career. Also important, he's best friends with one of the future building blocks in Scottie, and keeping him around even if only to keep Scottie motivated and maximizing his potential is a good move.
FVV it sounds like has a lot of interest from teams who missed out on him earlier. NYK being a major one. Further, losing the primary ball handler and making Scottie that would be a focus on his development, he would struggle but it would benefit him longterm. That being said, FVV has for a while now been the biggest leader for the Raptors, this isn't something that shows up obviously but it is something that is needed on any team and is not something i take lightly. I think teams that go COMPLETELY young are missing out on key parts of players developments. That being said, i think the move would be to trade FVV and give that position to Scottie to maximize his development in that spot.
Siakam...this one is really hard. This guy has been fantastic this year, is an All-NBA talent. This also means a supermax is there for him if he gets All-NBA 1 more time, so his next contract could be massive. This wouldn't be a huge deal if we are going younger because that usually means cutting other costs, so having a supermax mixed with some lower costs is completely sustainable. Keeping Siakam but benching him like OKC with Shai while they were tanking, give him more time to develop as he really likes to do could do wonders for him...but because that All-NBA supermax is right there for him I don't think that's something he necessarily agrees with at this time. If we want a quick retool again keeping Siakam could do the team wonders to keep a player like that. Keeping him also means he might make us be too good to get to the very bottom of the standings which is where we would NEED to get to for this to be worth it. I also love his story and home grown skills. Trading him presumably results in a young potential star player and some draft picks. I think with Siakam I would prefer to keep him unless the trade is overwhelmingly good. Trading him would mean a much longer lower end and a bigger rebuild. He's only 29 so plenty of time left of him at or near the peak of talent., and he is a living breathing walking example of how to improve. He is at the gym constantly, always putting in the work to be the best and you want that kind of example on your team.
Boucher is another one. Very nice bench player who knows his role, probably has a lot of interest in him for the right price. Won't get much back but can get something positive for sure.
Other pieces that aren't significant but are obvious moves away: Thad (almost expiring with small guarantee next year), Khem (unlikely, pretty sure full guarantee next year), Porter Jr.
Up playing time significantly: Banton, Flynn, Champagnie, Koloko
How/Who do we play?
The focus at that point should be mostly on Scottie. Give him the ball as primary ball handler and let him play. He will struggle but that's part of the process so who cares.
I think I want Banton to be the starting PG and secondary ball handler. Lengthy and quick, we want to hone his ability to guard PG's if the plan is still to be an extra long team.
When Precious is back I want him to be the starting lineup as well. PF or C is a tougher choice. He has very good defensive numbers at C, but he also doesn't have the rim protection and we have a player who does very well in Koloko. So do we put him in to develop as well? Rim protection isn't everything, ask Gasol about that, our best defensive C barely got blocks but had a massive influence on defense. I want him back as a coach to be honest and Precious as a C, but I would be fine with Koloko at C for a tank job and see what Precious has at PF. Part of Precious being good at C is the mismatches it causes, something that Minny is learning now with KAT at PF is that moving a player to their more ideal position and removing the mismatches they bring goes both ways.
Siakam presumably would still be playing part time so when he is he obviously starts and plays. When he isn't the Precious is in at PF.
OG plays SF when he plays, otherwise Champagnie I think.
Anything else we want to prioritize?
